"Day of the Dead" Box - White Skeleton

These beautifully hand-painted wood boxes are often called "Catrina" boxes, or "Day of the Dead" boxes, and are a popular symbol in Mexican culture.  For centuries, Mexicans have had the cultural tradition of honoring the dead, which culminates each year in the "Day of the Dead" festivities and celebration (Nov. 1 and 2). Loved ones go to grave sites weeks prior to the "Day of the Dead" and families build altars, decorated with pictures, marigold flowers, and offerings of food and drink, in honor of their loved ones who have passed. This painted box illustrates a woman, dressed in an ornate hat and wearing a matching gown.
